Josh Allen Weekly: 2024 Entering Week Four Edition
Examining Josh Allen's 2024 metrics to asses trends and measure his performance.
It was a special performance for Josh Allen in the Buffalo Bills’ 47-10 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday Night Football in Week Three. Allen completed 23-of-30 passes for 263 yards with four passing touchdowns while adding 44 yards on the ground and did so in three quarters of football since the game was out of hand and the backups took over. It was the first game in NFL history where a quarterback completed 75 percent of his passes, threw 4+ touchdown passes, had no turnovers, did not get sacked and led his team in rushing all in the same game.
It’s a long season but Josh Allen is comfortably the MVP favorite at this point. He is executing the quarterback position better than any other player and it’s not particularly close. His 92.6 total QBR is the best by any player through three games since ESPN introduced the metric in 2006. His EPA per play is higher through Week 3 than any player since at least 2010.
The new offensive philosophy in Buffalo has unlocked another level to Allen’s game and it’s exciting to think about the overall trajectory of the Bills’ offense. I’ve been asked several times since Monday Night about the sustainability of what Buffalo is doing offensively and what adjustments will be needed as defenses gain more of an understanding as to what the offense likes to do. It’s a fair question, but that’s also exactly why Buffalo made this switch. While it has made Allen more efficient, the passing offense isn’t about any one player. If defenses want to take something away, the Bills aren’t reliant on that one thing to be productive. It puts defenses in a bind and keeps the Bills rolling. The adaptability of the Bills’ offensive operation is where optimism can be found.
Coming out of such an exceptional performance, I’m excited to dive into the metrics that tell the story of where Allen is finding success and how that has made him so efficient.
