This post was a lot more fun to write after the first three weeks of the season! The reality is that things have fallen off dramatically over the last two weeks for Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills’ passing offense.

In one of the least efficient games of Allen’s career, he completed just 9-of-30 passes for 131 yards with one touchdown against the Houston Texans.

9-of-30!

There are several contributing factors to the drop-off in production for Allen. Play calling, wide receiver talent, protection schemes and Allen himself have this passing game in a rut.

The good news? A lot of it is fixable.

The success of Allen’s first three games made us forget all of the new around Allen and how much game experience together matters in sustaining a high level of performance. The only wide receiver on the roster to play in a game with Allen before 2024 was Khalil Shakir who missed the game against Houston with an ankle injury. Not having Shakir, who STILL leads the team in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns, is no small subtraction from the lineup. That said, only nine completions on 30 attempts is egregious. His 30% completion percentage is the lowest for a quarterback with at least 30 passing attempts in a game in the last 30 seasons.

Let’s take a fresh look at Allen’s year-to-date metrics and break down how the performance against Houston impacted things.
